Groups in Little Sutton come together for Ellesmere Port in Bloom bid
20 June 2019Community groups in Little Sutton are joining forces to hold a day of action on 6 July in support of the Ellesmere Port in Bloom bid.Residents are invited to come along and join Little Sutton Sapphires Womens’ Institute (WI), Facebook group PALS-Positive Action for Little Sutton and Community Rangers supported by the Council’s StreetCare and ASIST (Area Streets Information and Solutions Team) officers. The action day will include a litter pick on the village streets, the pump track and other children’s play areas and weeding in the courtyard between the library and the community centre by volunteers. Maintenance of the newly installed raised planters, paid for by fundraising organised by the Sapphires WI and made by another local group, Men in Sheds will also take place. This year’s Ellesmere Port in Bloom entry will include a significant contribution from Little Sutton, with the previous litter picks, the development of a community vegetable plot and this year’s first Scarecrow Festival from 23 to 30 June, all contributing to the community engagement element. The groups also plan to transform a currently unloved bed in the courtyard from a couple of unattractive shrubs into an attractive flower bed with centrepiece planting. The Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategy Transport, Councillor Karen Shore said: “It’s great to see a community show so much pride for where they live. I hope as many people as possible will be able to give us some of their time to help this event. It will make a real difference to this year’s full Ellesmere Port in Bloom bid. “I know PALS and the Sapphires WI have been running similar action days in the village every other month and have further events planned for 7 September and 9 November this year. Refreshments are provided in the community centre by the ladies from the WI, usually including a selection of home-made cakes, which are thoroughly enjoyed at the end of the morning’s work.” If you would like to get involved meet at Little Sutton Community Centre between 10am and 12pm on Saturday 6 July. Please make sure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. Litter pickers and plastic bags will be available but the groups would be very grateful if volunteers could bring along gardening tools to help with the work.
