Alert message sent 27/03/2018 17:47:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

There has been a further report where a victim in our area has been conned out of cash. This person had received a call on her home number from a female who gave her name as 'JESSICA'. This person said that the victim, who was elderly, was entitled to a refund through Personal Protection Insurance of £3500 and JESSICA could facilitate this with an initial payment of £275. JESSICA then explained that the victim needed to purchase £275 worth of iTune vouchers and pass the codes to JESSICA who could then release the money at the other end. The victim did this and did not receive any money.  JESSICA called back apologising and saying that there was another fee payable in the same manner of £500 of iTune vouchers and the victim went to a Widnes town centre store where she attempted to buy the vouchers but, thankfully the security staff questioned this and sought advice from the police.
Our advice is simple - Do NOT entertain these phone calls.  You are in control and there is no obligation to even speak let alone have a conversation.  You can hang up, leave the phone line open and carry on with your business, you can tell the caller you are not interested and that they shouldn't be phoning you.  With any of your actions DO NOT ENGAGE in conversation with the person as they can often entice you to making decisions that, upon reflection you wouldn't have made.
If you have contact with any person who you feel may be vulnerable to phone calls such as this please make them aware. Often older generations are more trusting and not as aware that there are those out there who prey on such people.  If you can do your bit by raising the issue the number of people becoming victims should reduce.
If you have been a recent victim of such a crime please, don't be embarrassed or otherwise reluctant to tell anybody as we want these matters to be dealt with.  Please let us know by calling telephone number 101 - you can contact us online at our website - you can call ActionFraud on 0300 123 2040 or online via - they also have a Twitter account on @actionfrauduk
If you are involved in community groups please raise this issue with all those attending and lets try and stop this menace.
Thank You for your time.
