Alert message sent 20/05/2021 17:35:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

User of the WhatsApp messaging system are being warned of a new scam whereby fraudsters claim to be your friend in order to access your messages.

WhatsApp users have reportedly received messages that seemingly come from friends and stating they have sent you a 6-digit code by mistake, and can you forward it them.

The six-digit code is used by Whatsapp as a security feature when you upgrade or get a new phone and is sent to users in a text message.

Please DO NOT pass on this code! You are opening your account to abuse as criminals will then have access to all of your WhatsApp messages.

People have also reported being locked out of their accounts after being conned by the scam.
