Cyber Crime

Alert message sent 12/11/2021 16:42:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Cybercrime will have an affect on most people in some way so I wanted this post to reach our rural communities.
Becoming a victim is easily done and you can take steps to prevent this following the 5C’s. Further details can be found at
We have previously posted advice on layering your security for your homes and equipment but your personal details are just as important. You can find yourself out of pocket without a criminal even entering your home or business.
An example of this and one we see often is where you receive an email or message from a known friend asking for a favour. You are asked to purchase a gift card as the friend is currently stuck in a meeting and it’s important. You agree to this and they ask you once done you scratch off and send them the security number on the back. The friend explains they will reimburse you when they get home.
Now some people would get suspicious at the part where they were asked to scratch off the back however with busy lives or more vulnerable people this is easily not thought of. Sending the security number allows the person to activate and use the gift card.
This is not a friend it’s a criminal that’s hacked your friends account.
This link will also take you to some useful contacts.
